Sketch images

I was just reading something by David duChemin where he referred to the concept of ‘sketch images’, which I’ve seen mentioned before; I was reminded how much I like that approach to creating photos. The idea is that you shoot a lot of different frames when pursuing a shot, trying a wide range of compositions, angles, poses, etc. There are so many moving parts in a photograph that you can’t just shoot the first one you think of and expect that to be THE shot. You simply have to do the work of finding an exceptional photograph. Creative intuition is a critical part of the process, but it’s not some kind of magical luck ability that consistently gives you the insight to know exactly how to shoot the best photo on the first try. Sometimes you roll a natural 20, but usually you don’t.
